The sewing Studio
December 2007
    Project of The Month

Ho, ho, ho, sexy seamstresses (and all your studly *MAN* seamsters who love sewing, too)! Lots is cooking right now at the studio. Stop by on Sunday, December 16th between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. for our wrap party for the Six-Hour Sweatshop charity event. Holiday cheer, sewing galore, and familiar faces. (Want to donate your skills or your fabric? Check out www.lovesewing.com/sweatshop.) Next year’s looking busy already. We’re introducing FREE STUDIO TIME (we’ll let you know in January), we’re honing the custom dressmaking and altering side of the business, we’re plugging away at our learn-at-home video classes, and we’re scouting a second location in Pickering (to open in April at the latest). Thanks for all your support this year. We can’t wait to give you a great ‘08! — Denise

Florida Flamingo Ornament

(1) Fold hot pink felt in half and pin flat.
(2)Find an image of a flamingo on the Internet and print it out.
(3) Pin the paper image to the felt.
(4) Using a shorter stitch length, sew around the perimeter of the image, excluding the legs, making sure to backstitch. When finished, gently tear off the paper template.
(5)Cut skinny strips of black felt and hand-sew to them to the body. Sew two black beads at the bottom of the legs.
(6) Sew a silver sequin for the eye and a piece of silver ribbon for hanging.

sewing tip

When it comes to topstitching and edge-stitching, sewing straight lines is a trick to master. Try applying masking tape along the edge or seam where you want to sew and when you’re ready to go at it, you’ll have a visual guide for the entire stitching journey.

Stay Tuned

FREE STUDIO TIME is coming in January. Swing by our space to work on any project or just hang out and chat. Details will be sent out in the new year, so gather up your projects to bring them by!

  Upcoming Classes

We’re taking a bit of a break over the holidays, but there’s still a few classes and happenings at the studio. If you’ve got free time this December, we’d love to see you in the studio for our Holiday Boot Camp or a workshop. Also, look ahead to our super-busy January schedule, offering weekday morning Introductory Sewing classes and all the other regulars.

  Introductory Sewing HOLIDAY BOOT CAMP

(Monday to Friday Dec. 17 - 21 from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m.)
Eager to learn how to sew? Try our condensed version of our Introductory Sewing class. 14 hours in 5 days! Make a skirt, drawstring bag, and learn many basic sewing skills. Also a great option for someone who wants a refresher!

  Drop-in

We'll guide you through a new project or help you with challenging ones you can’t seem to finish on your own. Bring in anything; whether it’s one fashion piece or several home decor and alteration items, we'll help you work on it at your own pace over four weeks. (Drop-in classes have an open format and no formal lesson.)

  s Man Class

Gents, your time has come. Your shirts will be button less no more, and the money you'll save hemming your own pants will eventually afford you a new flat screen, we swear. Oh yeah, and the best part: you'll be whipping up a sexy pair of cottage/pajama pants!

  s Quick Start

This program is geared toward building and developing sewing skills. It is a great continuation of Introductory Sewing or the perfect alternative for those who just want to focus on learning and refining basic sewing skills. Best part is, you get to make an apron!

  s Introductory Sewing

Whether you're a first-time seamstress-in-the-making or a frequent dabbler looking to increase your knowledge and refine your skills, this program is a great place to start. And FYI, we are now running weekday morning classes. Tell your friends!
