• The Pickering location is under way. The schedule and details will be online at the end of this month.

Can’t wait to see you! — Denise

Valentine Vase Cover

Materials needed: fabric, one for the base fabric and a red fabric for the hearts, and anything else that your heart desires, go crazy!

(1) Measure the circumference and the height of the vase you want to cover.
(2) Cut out three rectangles of fabric, leaving 5/8” around the perimeter of each piece, for seam allowances and finishing.
(3) Sew all three pieces together with right sides together, completing the circle. (The three pieces help maintain the circle effect.)
(4) Press seams flat and open and finish them.
(5) Turn the top down 5/8” and topstitch, and do the same at the bottom.
(6) Sew on hearts by hand, using contrasting thread and anything else that you’ve chosen.
sewing tip

If you come across a piece of fabric that no longer has its selvages (let’s say you found it in an ends bin, or in your closet from years back) there is still a way to determine the lengthwise and crosswise grains. By gently pulling on the fabric in different areas with both of your hands, you can determine the grain. The area with the most stretch is your true bias, the area with the middle amount of stretch is your crosswise grain and the area with the least amount of stretch is your lengthwise grain. Most patterns require you to place your pattern piece on the fabric with your grain arrow parallel to the selvage (lengthwise grain).

Stay Tuned

The Sewing Studio will be opening a sister location in Pickering coming this spring! We think it’s time we gave those suburban folk a spin on the old machine without asking them to drive into the T-Dot for lessons and workshops. Stay tuned for info on the Pickering grand opening, and the one-year anniversary for our downtown location. The party ROCKED last year and we can’t wait to do it again!

Our Fashion School program is just what you need to get into design school and get the job you want. We’ll send out a bulletin, but keep your eyes peeled on the website: www.lovesewing.com

  Upcoming Classes

Hello February; a month meant to celebrate the romantic bond between lovers. Instead of the traditional Godiva chocolates or hanky-panky panties, why not try creating your own Valentine gifts? Or, better yet, give the gift of learning to sew. There’s still time to pop into the studio and make sweet “studio time” love to one of our sewing machines (be gentle), or to buy a gift certificate for your luvah!

  Ready-to-Wear (StartingFeb 5)

Sew a garment of your choice at your own pace. Need help deciding? Try a lined dress, a denim jacket, or a carryall bag. Become more comfortable using a commercial pattern while learning skills specific to garment making and valuable tricks of the trade.

  Sewing Plus (StartingFeb 7)

A chance for intermediate and advanced sewers to go nuts. We'll guide you through a new project or help you with challenging ones you can’t seem to finish on your own. Bring in anything; whether it’s one fashion piece or several home decor and alteration items, we'll help you work on it at your own pace over four weeks.

  s Quick Start(starting Feb. 9)

This program is geared toward building and developing sewing skills. It is a great continuation of Introductory Sewing or the perfect alternative for those who just want to focus on learning and refining basic sewing skills. Learn: sewing-machine basics, how to sew bias tape as a bound finish, inverted pleating, pocket placement and two hemming techniques.

s Introductory Sewing (Spring break boot camp and regular classes end of Feb.)

Whether you're a first-time seamstress-in-the-making or a frequent dabbler looking to increase your knowledge and refine your skills, this program is a great place to start. And FYI, we are now running weekday morning classes. Tell your friends!
